As a child I have the fondest of memories of going to Nan and Pop’s house, in Laurieton, NSW. Swimming at Pilot Beach, learning to knit and family BBQ’s – but hold on a minute!
My Pop, Poppa Rupe (Rupert) was an amazing man. He was blind – but could still fix a lawn mower and the posties bike – by touch. Pop taught us kids to pick fruit, by touch and smell, grew Lady Finger Bananas, and cooked a terrific BBQ – made from bricks and a whopping stainless steel top! He used to light it with a blue plumbers gas torch – oh, I miss you Pop.
I still have his Army Dog Tags – they are very precious to me.
On these BBQ’s, on a hot summers day, would be steak, sausages, potato, onion, pineapple and banana. Sweet, soft, caramelised Banana! I cook them a little differently now, but these are for my Pop.
Thanks for the memories.
Ingredients
How to?
While you are cooking the selected protein, place the bananas skin side down on the BBQ plate, for a good 10 minutes. When the skin is blackened, turn the banana and cook for about 5 minutes – depending on the heat of your BBQ – until the cut surface of the banana is nicely caramelised.
It might sound a bit odd, but I guarantee, this is a fantastic addition to any summer BBQ.
